Submitting
There are many on-line directories. However, the ones listed below
are the most important. If you are short on time,
submit only to the major ones. If you have more time, then move on to
the last one - Virtual Promote.
You must also keep track of when you submitted to them and go
back and check to verify your listings.
- Write a brief 1-2 line summary of your web site. Here is an example from our fictitious Widgets R Us company:
Educational toys including wooden puzzles, boats, and trains.

However, also realize that the directories are human edited and chances are if you try to cram more
than one or two keywords - your description will be edited.
- If they ask for 25 words or less, then give them 25 words or less, don't attempt to include a few more words.
Follow their directions explicitly, especially on submitting - if they say submit your home URL -
then only submit your home URL - you are dealing with HUMANS here, not
machines. Follow the directions,
and be polite!
Correlations between Directories and Search Engines
If you are unclear as to the difference between a directory and a search engine -

Getting listed in directories will increase your ranks in search engines.
It is imperative that you get into the major directories if you are trying to
increase your ranks in various search engines.
For instance, The Write Market could never get a rank in Lycos. When we became listed in
Open Directory Project (ODP) - suddenly, we were bopped to #1 in Lycos for "promotion tutorial".
Major Directories
Get listed in these directories and you will have it made. Try to get listed in all of them.
NOTE: Keep track of how many times you submit and who you are submitting to. You will be
considered a "spammer" if you submit too many times.
- Open Directory Project
- Yahoo
- LookSmart
- VirtualPROMOTE: After you've submitted to the big ones above, tackle this directory of over 500 places to submit your site too. Take about three per day, be sure to write them
down, and follow up. If you can get through this list - you'll be well on your way to major traffic generation!
