Gauley River Rustics fine candles are made in small batches by the same artisan, ensuring excellent quality control and close attention to be paid to the details of each candle.
Handmade candles are denser, due to the separate pourings required when making candles by hand. This density results in a cleaner burning candle than machine-made.
Unlike many manufacturers, Gauley River Rustics adds fragrance to each separate pouring. Using unscented wax in the bottoms of candles is a common cost-cutting technique among candle crafters and mass-producers, however, Gauley River Rustics does not sacrifice quality for cost.

At Gauley River Rustics, our candle moulds are wicked prior to the pouring of the candle. Oftentimes mass-produced candles are wicked after the cooling process, when wicking is inserted through a hole in the cold candle. This technique, though a time saver, can cause “wick drowning” and other complications during burning. Our process better secures the wick and increases the burning quality of the finished candle.
Gauley River Rustics fine handcrafted candles meet the voluntary national fire-safety standards set forth by the National Candle Association and the ASTM.
Quality pillar candles usually have a burning recommendation of one hour per inch in diameter each time the candle is burned (4” diameter = 4 hours). Gauley River Rustics candles have a longer burning recommendation of 1 ½ hours per inch in diameter (4” = 6+ hours). Our pillar candles are available in 3” diameters (“evening candles”) and 3 ½ - 4” diameters (“all day candles.”)
The life of our extraordinary fragrances lasts the life of the candle. If unburned, our candles produce a “cold fragrance release.” When burned, our candles deliver a powerful fragrance release that can scent an entire room within minutes.
