How to find out what your clients really think of you

Have you ever asked your clients or customers for feedback? It’s recognised as a sensible business practice these days but many people have neither the time nor the know-how to carry it out. And besides, how truthful will your clients or customers be when approached directly for comment?

However, it is a fallacy that just because a client or customer has been with you for years and years, they are happy. They may be keeping their business with you only because nothing better has come along yet – scary thought isn’t it? Perhaps one of your largest accounts is just biding their time until another service provider comes along with a better offer.

There is something you can do which will give you insight into your client’s opinions and help you keep their business: a covert survey carried out by mail, with a prize as an incentive to participate.

The survey itself does not have to be professionally designed – you can devise one in an evening. Just ask yourself what information you’d really like to receive and tailor the questions to fit.

Be sure the prize is of reasonable value: think travel vouchers, gift tokens, cash and movie tickets – things that are nice, fun and a surprise to receive. Things that make a person feel relaxed.

To keep the survey covert, use the services of a company like Private Box Ltd. They provide a ‘pay as you receive’ PO Box system that will enable you to design the survey so it appears to be from a ‘new player’ in your industry wanting to gather information. This ensures you’ll get honest feedback on the client’s current provider (you).

And lastly, don’t forget stamped self-addressed envelopes for the replies to be returned.

It is suggested that you get into the habit of running such surveys on a regular basis. The habit of continuous improvement is certainly an attitude you want for your business.
